Competence Based Instrument Rating Course

Course objective

The aim of the competency-based modular flying training course is to train PPL or CPL holders for the instrument rating, considering prior instrument flight instruction and experience. It is designed to provide the level of proficiency needed to operate airplanes under IFR including PBN operations and in IMC.

Training program

Theorical training program consists of 80 hours of theorical knowledge instruction and 40 flight time hours (45 hours in case of MEP)

Credits

Applicants for the competency-based modular IR(A) holding a Part-FCL PPL or CPL and a valid IR(A) issued in compliance with the requirements of Annex 1 to the Chicago Convention by a third country may be credited some flight hours and theorical exams.

Privileges

The privileges of a holder of an IR are to fly aircraft under IFR, including PBN operations, with a minimum decision height of no less than 200 feet (60 m).
In the case of a multi-engine IR, these privileges may be extended to decision heights lower than 200 feet (60 m) when the applicant has undergone specific training at an ATO and has passed section 6 of the skill test prescribed in Appendix 9 to the Part FCL of 1178/2011 rules in multi-pilot aircraft.

Holders of an IR shall exercise their rivileges in accordance with the conditions established in Appendix 8 to the PART FCL of 1178/20011 regulations.

Requirements

A CB-IR applicant shall hold:

  • at least a PPL in the appropriate aircraft category, and
    1. the privileges to fly at night in accordance with FCL.810, if the IR privileges will be used at night; or
    2. an ATPL in another category of aircraft; 
  • or a CPL, in the appropriate aircraft category, and
    have completed at least 50 hours of cross-country flight time as PIC in aeroplanes, TMGs, helicopters or airships, of which at least 10 hours shall be in the relevant aircraft category and,
    1. Have at least 250 hours flight time in total or,
    2. Hold a license more than 5 years and have at least 150hours flight time.
  • a language proficiency of at least level 4 four certified by an English examiner accepted by CAA. See also OM chapter A.13 for details on Language proficiency endorsement.
  • at least a Class 2 medical certificate IR checked.
